Filigree is one of the oldest and most refined metalworking techniques in the world, dating back thousands of years across civilisations from Mesopotamia to the Ottoman Empire. Delicate silver or gold threads are twisted, curled, and soldered into intricate openwork patterns that seem almost impossible to create by hand.

The Trabzon Tradition

Trabzon, on Turkey's Black Sea coast, has been the heartland of Anatolian filigree for centuries. The city's master silversmiths developed a distinctive style characterised by exceptional fineness and botanical motifs. This living tradition has been passed down from master to apprentice, preserving techniques that remain virtually unchanged for generations.

The Technique

Creating a filigree piece requires extraordinary patience, precision, and years of training. Each step demands the steady hand of a master artisan.

• •Wire Drawing: Pure silver is drawn through progressively smaller dies to create threads as fine as 0.2mm
• •Twisting: Two or more threads are twisted together to form the characteristic rope-like wire
• •Soldering: Individual elements are carefully positioned and soldered using a fine-tipped torch
• •Assembly: Hundreds of tiny components are assembled into the final design, creating a unified piece
