Delicate silver or gold threads are twisted, curled, and soldered into intricate openwork patterns that seem almost impossible to create by hand.

The Technique

Creating a filigree piece requires extraordinary patience, precision, and years of training. Each step demands the steady hand of a master artisan.

• •Wire Drawing: Pure silver is drawn through progressively smaller dies to create threads as fine as 0.2mm
• •Twisting: Two or more threads are twisted together to form the characteristic rope-like wire
• •Soldering: Individual elements are carefully positioned and soldered using a fine-tipped torch
• •Assembly: Hundreds of tiny components are assembled into the final design, creating a unified piece

Wire drawing

Pulling pure silver through progressively smaller dies until thin wires emerge — the starting material of every filigree piece.

Twisting

Winding two or more silver wires together to form the characteristic rope-like base thread.

Openwork (ajour)

A technique where the negative space between fine wires becomes part of the design. Filigree breathes through its openwork.

Soldering

Fusing each wire in place by melting silver alloy with a fine flame — patient, precise work.

Hammering

Hand-hammering with small steel tools to give the surface texture and character. Each strike leaves a unique mark.

Polishing

The final stage — soft brushes and paste bring out the silver's natural lustre.
